Good morning. Can parasitic infections of various kinds, such as human roundworms, giardia, streptococci or others living in the intestine, weaken the effect of hormonal contraception if there are no stomach symptoms, no loose stools or diarrhea? Can parasites weaken contraception only if they make themselves known in this way? Does the mere fact that they may be in the intestine already affect the absorption and action of contraceptive pills?

And what does liver metabolism depend on? If I eat a lot at once, then the pill can work less?

To @Beata:
No, the increase in muscle mass does not affect the effectiveness of birth control pills. Their action depends mainly on the regularity of use, liver metabolism and possible interactions with other drugs.
If I take birth control pills and I have gained muscle mass than I had, do I have heavier muscles, can anti-contraceptive pills be ineffective? They may not work?

The presence of parasites in the gastrointestinal tract may cause poorer absorption of nutrients, but no changes in drug metabolism have been found (there is a risk that such studies have not been carried out at all). In the case of unambiguous symptoms indicating a parasitic infection, treatment should be started (a visit to the doctor is necessary - most anthelmintic drugs are available on prescription). A similar situation applies to abnormal flora present in the stool. Appropriate treatment should be applied. It is worth remembering that antifungal drugs can interact with hormonal contraception - you should inform your doctor about the preparations you are using and follow the dosage recommendations.
If you have any doubts, I encourage you to use the teleconsultation with a doctor - the service is available on our website in the e-visit tab:

And if fungal overgrowth is found from a stool test, can it also affect contraception?
