A negative pregnancy test taken approximately 24 days after sex is reliable, provided that the test was performed correctly, according to the instructions, and the test has the appropriate sensitivity (e.g. 20-25 mIU/ml). After this time, the level of hCG hormone, if fertilization has occurred, should already be detectable in the urine, and the test should give a positive result.
However, it is worth remembering that some factors, such as taking the birth control pill after intercourse (e.g. Escapelle), can affect the menstrual cycle and delay menstruation, which does not necessarily mean pregnancy.
If your period is late and the test is negative, I recommend consulting your gynecologist, who may order a more sensitive blood test for hCG and possibly an ultrasound to confirm or rule out pregnancy and assess the cause of the delayed menstruation.
