As a result of using isotretinoin (the active ingredient in Izotek) orally during pregnancy, the risk of birth defects is probably 20 to 30%. However, it must be taken into account that no one deliberately investigates how much retinoids can damage the fetus - this would be unethical. Statistics on teratogenicity (causing defects in the fetus) may therefore vary. Some health problems may also not manifest themselves directly at birth. The risk of severe foetal harm with isotretinoin (the active ingredient in Izotek) is therefore high, even if the exposure was short-lived. Patients using Izotek should effectively protect themselves against pregnancy, and women who are already pregnant must not take Izotek. The drug can cause severe damage to the brain, face, ear, eyes, heart, vessels and some glands of the fetus. It also increases the likelihood of miscarriage. It should be emphasized once again that there is no safe dose of retinoids during pregnancy. During treatment and for a month after its completion, pregnancy is strictly contraindicated. I enclose additional information about the drug Izotek.
