First of all, I would like to point out that these side effects are the basis for stopping the use of Osagrand and consulting your doctor as soon as possible. The drug Osagrand contains ibandronic acid, which, by affecting the structure and mineralization of bones, leads to an increase in bone mass, reduces the likelihood of their fractures. Oral administration of this group of drugs can lead to irritation of the gastric mucosa. That is why it is so important to take Osagrand properly, i.e. in the morning, about an hour before a meal or another medicine. In addition, the drug should be washed down with about a glass of water (I pay attention that it is not highly mineralized water, with a high calcium content). Taking the drug must be done in an upright position, and after drinking the tablet, you should not lie down for at least an hour. Such use of the drug is crucial and has a protective function, preventing the formation of erosions, damage to the mucous membrane within the esophagus or stomach. In some patients, however, the gastric mucosa is already so irritated, even by the drugs used every day, that even the described method of taking Osagrand does not protect it from further damage. The result is, m.in, abdominal pain, heartburn, burning, sternal pain. There are reports of the possibility of mandibular necrosis when using this group of drugs. The occurrence of osteonecrosis of the mandible is generally associated with tooth extraction and/or local infection (inclusion with osteomyelitis). Diagnosed cancer, the use of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, corticosteroids, improper oral hygiene are also listed as risk factors. As part of the help, please first of all stop the drug and contact the attending physician. Due to the fact that I do not know if and possibly what other drugs are used on a daily basis, I suggest ad hoc use of heartburn preparations in the form of milks / syrups, such as: Ranigast SOS or Gaviscon. Please remember to take these preparations two hours before or after using any other medicine/dietary supplement.
