The active substance in XIfaxan is rifaximin. Rifaximin is an antibiotic, a semi-synthetic derivative of rifamycin. This drug is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, effective against both Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, aerobes and anaerobes. The active substance in Xifaxan is not a penicillin derivative.
