Distinguishing melanoma from a mole can be made by a dermatologist during a dermatoscope examination – this is a simple and painless examination, which is worth undergoing if disturbing changes are observed on the skin. Distinctive features of melanoma are the lack of symmetry, irregular boundaries, non-uniform coloration, increasing the size of the lesion, uneven surface. The dermatologist also collects a family history, assesses the location of the lesion (melanoma very often develops in places exposed to UV radiation).
