There is a significant interaction between benzodiazepines, which include the alprazolam contained in Xanax and omeprazole, which belongs to the group of proton pump inhibitors found in Polprazole. It consists in inhibition by proton pump inhibitors of enzymes responsible for the metabolism of benzodiazepines, which can lead to an increase in their concentration in the blood, thus intensifying their action and increasing the risk of side effects such as confusion, excessive sedation, dizziness or balance disorders. Omeprazole may also increase blood levels of escitalopram, the active substance in Escipram, one of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Combining drugs from the group of proton pump inhibitors, SSRIs and benzodiazepines requires special care on the part of both the doctor and the patient. If such a combination is necessary, a dose reduction of benzodiazepines and escitalopram may be needed. It is therefore important whether the drugs have been prescribed by one doctor - then you should be aware of the risks and observe the body's reaction, and if you observe disturbing symptoms, you should immediately contact your doctor. In the event that both drugs have been prescribed by different specialists, a re-consultation is necessary.
