Lek można stosować, aż do ustąpienia objawów kaszlu. W przypadku leczenia infekcji górnych dróg oddechowych, leczenie trwa zwykle od 7 do 14 dni. Jeśli lek ma być przyjmowany przewlekle, np. w leczeniu astmy czy POChP - o długości terapii powinien zdecydować lekarz, który ma dostęp do aktualnych wyników badań dziecka.
