Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection causes an acute viral disease transmitted mainly by Aedes mosquitoes (mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus). The disease occurs mainly in tropical and subtropical countries (Africa, Asia, South and Central America), but it can also appear in Europe.
The most characteristic symptom of Chikungunya virus infection is sudden, severe joint pain that can last for weeks or months.
The infection is transmitted by mosquitoes, and the symptoms may resemble other tropical diseases, such as dengue or Zika. The most common are fever, joint and muscle pain, headache, fatigue, rash (maculopapular rash, appears on the 2nd–5th day of the disease, most often on the trunk and limbs).
In most people, the disease is mild, but in the elderly, with chronic diseases or with reduced immunity, a more severe course is possible.
At the moment, there are no drugs for the Chikungunya virus. Only symptomatic treatment is used, such m.in. analgesics, antipyretics and anti-inflammatory drugs; Steroids; irrigation agents.
The only effective form of prevention is preventive vaccination.

It is worth knowing that in some pharmacies you can get a pharmaceutical prescription for the vaccine and get vaccinated at the pharmacy (e.g. against influenza, shingles, RSV).
