Hello. My 4.5-year-old daughter has been taking montelukast for 5 days. The next day after the first dose, a slight runny nose appeared. It intensifies day by day. Among the side effects is a respiratory infection and a runny nose. We have a doctor's appointment in three days. Should I stop taking the drug for now? My daughter has an enlarged third tonsil. He often has a runny nose.

It is not recommended to discontinue montelukast on your own without consulting a doctor. The severity of the runny nose may also result from the natural course of the infection or allergy, especially if the daughter has an enlarged third tonsil and a tendency to frequent runny noses. Montelukast rarely causes respiratory infections as a side effect. It is a drug used, m.in, in the treatment of asthma and allergies.
I encourage you not to stop treatment before you see a doctor unless your symptoms worsen rapidly or other worrying symptoms appear (e.g. difficulty breathing, high fever, etc.). A doctor's visit will allow you to assess whether the drug is suitable and whether additional treatment is necessary. In the meantime, you can use gentle methods of moisturizing the nose and keep your child hydrated.
