Naproxen is available over-the-counter at a dose of 200 mg or 220 mg (Naxii, Aleve).
Dosage recommended by the drug manufacturer:
"On an ad hoc basis for pain management, 2 tablets (400 mg) at a time, and then 1 tablet every 6 to 8 hours if necessary. The daily dose of 600 mg must not be exceeded. The medicinal product should not be used for more than 10 days in case of pain without clear medical indications."
Your doctor may recommend higher doses for short-term treatment of severe symptoms (prescription naproxen comes in doses of 250, 500 and 550 mg). If you have the impression that the effect of an OTC drug is insufficient, you should visit a specialist. I encourage you to consult the problem with a physiotherapist. Treatment of orthopaedic/rheumatic ailments with anti-inflammatory agents is only symptomatic. Rehabilitation is the right and long-term solution.
