The preparations most commonly used in the treatment of migraine headaches are triptans. The mechanism of action of drugs from this group consists in the contraction of excessively dilated (due to internal or external factors) blood vessels within the brain and the inhibition of trigeminal nerve activity. Drugs from this group are available in the form of tablets, tablets that disintegrate in the mouth and, for example, nasal spray (in the case of migraine with vomiting). A specific drug should be tailored to the patient's needs - it is difficult to assess which substance will be optimal in a given situation. Drugs from this group are: Sumatriptan, Zolmitriptan, Eletriptan and Almotriptan (available without a prescription under the name e.g. Dezamigren, Nomigren). Triptans can be used in combination with traditional painkillers or NSAIDs, e.g. Ibuprofen, Ketonal, Paracetamol, Pyralgin.

The latest drug available to people with min. 4 migraine attacks per month are Ajovy administered by injection once a month or once a quarter. Ajovy has a slightly different mechanism of action (it mainly affects the trigeminal system) and its effectiveness is considered in long-term treatment.

Contraindications to the use of both triptans and Ajova are cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic disease, hypertension, heart attack.

Other drugs used slightly less frequently in the prevention/treatment of migraines are, for example, Topiramat, Divascan. The choice of a specific therapy depends on the patient's clinical condition and the course of the disease.
