Sumamed (azithromycin) is not a standard antibiotic for the treatment of urinary tract infections in men because it does not cover all common pathogens. Sumamed can be used for uncomplicated infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, which can cause urethritis137. However, in the case of typical UTIs caused by other bacteria, other antibiotics may be the first choice.
Standard guidelines for the use of Sumamed (azithromycin) usually do not provide for a single intake of 1500 mg. In most indications, this antibiotic is used in divided doses. In the case of infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, 1 g (i.e. 2 tablets of 500 mg) is used once.
The recommended dose and method of administration depend on the doctor's indications. Severe abdominal pain and nausea can be a side effect of taking a high dose at once. It is worth consulting your doctor again to assess the tolerance of the drug and possibly change the therapy.
