Prednisolone can be used in pneumonia, but only in certain cases, e.g. in severe disease, when there is airway obstruction or in inflammation of autoimmune etiology. Standard bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics, and the use of corticosteroids requires a strict risk-benefit assessment by a physician.
Prednisolone, being a synthetic glucocorticoid, has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects, which may be beneficial in the treatment of some forms of pneumonia, especially when they are accompanied by severe inflammation. However, the use of prednisolone for pneumonia is associated with the risk of masking the symptoms of infection and reduced resistance to infection.
