Over-the-counter preparations are usually intended for children over 1 year of age. If the cough is accompanied by other disturbing symptoms (e.g. fever, shortness of breath or pain) or the cough intensifies rapidly, you should see a doctor. Until then, you can try inhalation, e.g.:
