Inflammation of the stomach and active peptic ulcer disease is a contraindication to the use of oral drugs containing ibandronic acid, due to its irritating effect:
"Oral administration of bisphosphonates may cause local irritation of the mucous membrane of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Due to the potential for irritation and potential worsening of the underlying disease, Ibandronat should be used with caution in patients with active upper gastrointestinal disease (e.g. Barret's oesophagus, dysphagia, other oesophageal diseases, gastritis, duodenitis or ulceration).
Adverse reactions such as esophageal mucositis, esophageal ulceration and esophageal erosions have been reported in patients receiving oral bisphosphonate therapy, in some cases severe, requiring hospitalization, rarely with bleeding or with subsequent esophageal stricture or perforation."
The use of the drug in the form of an injection allows you to bypass the gastrointestinal tract - it is the preferred form of administration in the case of contraindications to taking the oral variant. Details of treatment should be discussed with the doctor treating you for diagnosis and treatment.
