Diseases of the blood and hematopoietic system (haematological)
Hello, how should I take the preparation? It is often stated that iron should be taken in the morning or until noon, is this also a recommendation valid here? What about drinking coffee or tea before and after? How long should the distance be maintained? Is it true that rooibos tea, compared to other teas, does not significantly affect the absorption of iron, so you can drink it during this break, e.g. for coffee? Or is it better to take this preparation in the evening?

Yes, my answer applies to all iron preparations - including Szelazo SR, which is still iron after all. The recommendations I have mentioned to you result from my own experience and that of my patients who have taken this particular preparation (as well as other forms of iron). In my answer, you have quite clearly written why I suggest such solutions.
Thank you for your answer, but I have the impression that your answer refers to iron preparations in general, and not to this particular one, Shelazo + SR. If the manufacturer recommends taking it after a meal, please do not write that it should be taken on an empty stomach. In addition, you probably did not take into account that it is a preparation in an extended-release form. And finally, why are there such discrepancies in the answers? A few posts below, the editor, Anna Lewandowska, MSc in pharmacy, wrote that this preparation can be taken after dinner - you write that it cannot. What should the patient do? Choose the answers that suit him?

Iron is best absorbed on an empty stomach or taken between meals, which is why doctors often recommend taking the preparation before eating. Not every patient will tolerate this dosage well due to the irritating effect of iron - in this case, Shellazo should be taken with food. For the same reason, the product should not be taken in the evening/before bedtime (lying down after taking the drug promotes irritation of the esophagus).
Iron can interact with other preparations in numerous ways, so you should avoid taking zinc, calcium and phosphorus at the same time due to a significant reduction in absorption (if your doctor has recommended such supplementation, minerals should be taken at a different time of the day). Coffee, tea, milk and whole grains/high-fibre products can also reduce iron absorption, so an interval of 2-3 hours should be maintained between the drug and the aforementioned foods. Rooibos contains less tannins, so the risk of disorders is lower, while - as a rule - drugs are washed down only with water.
