Paxtin contains paroxetine, which inhibits the reuptake of serotonin by blocking the corresponding transporter.
As a result, the concentration of this neurotransmitter (serotonin) in the synaptic cleft increases and adaptive changes in the number and sensitivity of receptors occur, which improves their functioning. In conditions in which paroxetine treatment is indicated (e.g. episodes of major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders or anxiety disorders), neurotransmitter deficits and impaired neurotransmission occur, m.in. Therefore, it is recommended to increase the concentration of serotonin in synaptic clefts in their therapy.

Serotonergic syndrome, caused by too high levels of serotonin, is a serious, although very rare, side effect that may occur in patients treated with paroxetine. People who additionally use other drugs that increase the concentration of serotonin in the central nervous system are particularly at risk of it. This effect is observed in <1/10,000 people using the drug. The symptoms of serotonergic syndrome include, m.in, impaired consciousness and restlessness, vomiting, tachycardia, thermoregulation disorders, excessive sweating, tremors and muscle stiffness, hypertension or convulsions.

Taking the preparation in the manner prescribed by your doctor reduces the likelihood of this side effect. During medical appointments, it is always worth informing the specialist what medications you are using, so that he or she can choose the therapy in the safest way possible.

Transient decreased or increased blood pressure (which may not be related to serotonergic syndrome) as described in this leaflet is an uncommon side effect (≥1/1,000 to <1/100 of the user) and is usually seen in patients with pre-existing hypertension or anxiety.

If you experience any disturbing symptoms while taking the drug, please report them to your doctor.
