The drug has an antifungal effect, but does not increase the risk of mycosis if taken prophylactically.

According to the manufacturer:
"The spectrum of activity also includes fungal infections caused, m.in, by pathogenic species of Candida. The mechanism of action of nitroxoline is based on selective inhibition of specific enzymes, particularly RNA polymerase."
