Good morning. My gastroenterologist prescribed me MirzatenQ for esophageal motility disorders. It is the 7th day since I have been taking the drug and I feel terrible dry mouth which has intensified my reflux symptoms, confusion, malaise, lack of appetite. Should I still persevere in therapy, give the drug time, or does it mean that after so many days this drug will not help me? The worst is dry mouth, my tongue, throat and even nasal passages burn because of it.

Dry mouth is a very common side effect of Mirzaten. Other frequently observed side effects are due to the effects of the drug on the nervous system (drowsiness, confusion, etc.). In general, Mirzaten is used in the treatment of depressive disorders, but there have been reports (preceded by clinical trials) of the positive effect of mirtazapine in the treatment of functional dyspepsia (gastrointestinal motility disorders). The study lasted 8 weeks; After half a treatment cycle, patients experienced a significant improvement in their quality of life. The observed side effects should subside a little over time. A significant percentage of patients starting treatment with antidepressants observe a deterioration in well-being at the beginning of treatment, which passes after about 10-14 days. If you experience severe dry mouth, it is worth taking plenty of fluids and using preparations that moisturize the oral mucosa, e.g. Gelovox. Cevitt, Gardvit Olive. If there is no improvement after another 7 days, I encourage you to consult the problem with a doctor.
