Afobam (alprazolam), is a benzodiazepine used primarily to treat anxiety and panic. It is a drug that acts on the central nervous system, and its main action is to increase the activity of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which leads to sedation and reduced anxiety.
Heart block, a disorder in the heart's conduction of electrical impulses, is a rare but potentially serious cardiac problem. Common causes of heart block include heart disease, electrolyte imbalances, infections, and side effects of certain medications.
Alprazolam is relatively safe, and there is no strong evidence in the medical literature that it directly causes heart block. However, benzodiazepines can have an effect on the cardiovascular system, especially in people with existing heart problems or in the elderly.
