The pyridostigmine in Mestinon is a cholinergic medicine mainly used to treat myasthenia gravis, which works by increasing the levels of acetylcholine in neuromuscular synapses.
It is not widely known that pyridostigmine directly causes brittle teeth. However, cholinergic drugs can cause various side effects that can indirectly affect oral health, such as dry mouth (xerostomia) - pyridostigmine can affect saliva production. Reduced saliva production can lead to dry mouth, which in turn increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
Additionally, the drug affects the muscles of the face and jaw – Myasthenia gravis itself can affect the strength of the muscles in the face and jaw, which can affect the way you bite and chew food, potentially leading to dental injuries.
