Why does Hascovir cause nightmares?
Hello, my son had nightmares when administering hascovir syrup (already at the first dose for smallpox). Dreams woke him up at night, he was terrified, he told with great fear. Initially, when he woke up, he was in some kind of frenzy. We were very scared, because we had never had such situations with a child. What is the reason for this?
P.S. I recommend parents to change the medication to another one if there is a possibility. I stopped it after the first night. I don't recommend it because of the side effects.

According to the manufacturer:
"In cells not infected with acyclovir-sensitive viruses, endogenous thymidine kinase (CT) does not effectively use acyclovir as a substrate, resulting in little toxicity to mammalian cells."
Therefore, it can be assumed that there is a small risk of toxic effects of the drug on healthy cells, hence e.g. insomnia, temporary mental changes or nightmares.
