Plaquenil contains hydroxychloroquine - a derivative of aminoquinoline - which has several effects that may contribute to its use in the treatment of rheumatic diseases (m.in. interference with the activity of enzymes such as phospholipases and cholinesterases, inhibition of prostaglandin formation and release of peroxide by neutrophils). This drug does not belong to the group of steroid drugs. This medicine has not been observed to cause symptoms of water retention such as swelling of the extremities, swelling or weight gain.
