Dry cough – or non-productive cough – is a cough during which there is no expectoration of secretions from the respiratory tract. It is often one of the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, it can also accompany asthma, gastroesophageal reflux, heart failure, and even occur as a side effect of some medications (e.g. blood pressure lowering). Pharmacies offer preparations in the form of tablets and cough syrups that inhibit the cough reflex and soothe the irritated throat.
